General Description of Painting

This painting most likely depicts customers enjoying their time in a 70s coffee house in Singapore. The reflections of sunlight on the off colored walls suggest that it is a really another bright, sunny and sweltering day. The customers and several other people huddle themselves in the comforting shade of the coffee house. The people in the picture hiding under the shade of the pre World War II era “Five Foot Walkways” along the coffee house are enjoying freshly brewed coffee during lunch.

In the background there is a faint urban skyline of Singapore. The picture was unsigned and undated, apparently drawn by an unknown artist.

Through the eyes of Berger

History, history says almost everything in Berger’s view. However in the picture, the date is not known and the artist is not known. But the date can be estimated through several things that appear on the picture itself. Questions like “What is the history behind the painting” is asked.

In the backgrounds of the picture lies the huge skyscraper; clearly the OUB building. The skyscraper itself is being built recently in the 80s. The building itself is officially opened in the year 1986. Therefore the picture is most likely drawn in the late 80s till present. Additionally, in the foreground; the coffee shop itself stood in “Peking Street” located in the heart of “China town”, downtown Singapore.

Presently, the entire “China town” district was being refurbished into more of a tourist attraction area. The refurbishment project consist of preserving the historic value of the “five foot walkways” but bringing modern pubs, posh restaurants and shopping junctions into the scene, a project by the government to kill two birds with one stone. The refurbishment project started in the late 1990s. The history of the buildings in this picture tells a story and breaks down into a crucial time line. Therefore conclusion is that the painting is being painted after the OUB building is built in the late 1980s and before the refurbishment project before the late 1990s.

Here comes the question. According to what another piece of history depicts, the structures that stood in Peking Street have been evicted before the 1980s by the authorities. Therefore the coffee shop itself has been closed down in the early 80s to be exact. So in the case of this picture, why are there people being painted in the picture? The people that were drawn in the picture does not seem to be tourists or people visiting relics of the past, but they were drawn sitting down on chairs, taking their time sipping on drinks, communicating and having fun. The people “were” in the building. The people in this picture have been placed in this picture purposely for a special reason, known only to the artist.

From this conclusion, there are ways we can see and tell and ask the picture about the artist. Why and what is the reason that drove him to add those people into the picture? Were the people from another scene that appeared from the artist’s memory? Why is this scene from his memory so significant that he wanted to add into the painting? Was he in the picture amongst the people? Was the painting too “empty” without the presence of people? Or was it just for aesthetic purposes; just to make the painting livelier or pretty?

There are a few points of view and assumptions from these questions. One view is that the people were added on just for aesthetic purposes, the artist may not be conscious to why he painted those people at that time. But in fact, people in the past used to enjoy hanging around coffee shops just like what the picture depicted, therefore the people the artist painted were actually from another piece of time, but brought into the picture for the sake of aesthetic purpose. Sub-consciously the artist preserved, rekindled the soul, the hustle and bustle and the sounds that used to be with the evicted building.

Another view is that the artist actually was amongst the people in the painting. He used to be one of them, enjoying spending time with friends, family and strangers in the coffee shop. It could be said that it is a scene from the artist’s memory that he wanted to preserve in that particular place and setting. In this case, he may have painted the painting in a spirit of longing. Hoping to preserve the spirit of the coffee shop and his “sovereign” experience before the refurbishment, the artist painted the scene out of his memory so as to preserve it as a material form. Or the artist could have simply done it just to remind himself about the good old times that he used to have.

MY VIEW

My dad drew the painting. I was with him…with uncle Tong. I was around 10. Picture was “edited” by renowned Singaporean artist Tong Chin Sye, who always mocked my actions, a person whom I really liked to be with, he talks lots of crap that makes sense; The reason why the painting was unsigned.

Beautiful artwork from my point of view… lots more to be added…

DAMMIT I HOPE MY DAD WOULD SEND THE PIX OF THE PAINTING….
THE PICTURE SPEAKS MORE THAN 1500 WORDS.

Voi Ah Entende Espanol! (i am going to understand spanish)

Yes the official 3rd language for me is going to be Spanish. Rumoured easier to learn than english... NO SLIENT Ps, Ks, Ws, CHs, blah blah and what so ever so many of them... I am so surprised when coming to think that i actually learnt how to speak the language "English"... AND CHINESE... many many thanks to Ah Tok and Teachers helping me trudge through this shit.

Notice the difference between music made by people speaking another language. I suspect music is actually a "warped" form of that particular language; another form to express themselves with "words". Sooooooo....

Lesson 1

La - The
Ah - To
Voi - I am going
Yo - 'Jo' - I
Como - How

Bien - Good
Cagar - Shit
Boca - Mouth
Callate - 'Cajate' - Shutup
Entende - understand
Comprende - comprehend

Hola - 'Ola' - Hello
Estan - Are you
Como Estan - How are you (accents on first O and Last A)
Callate La Boca - Shut you mouth
Voi Ah Cagar - I am going to shit
Voi Ah Entende Espanol - i am going to understand spanish

JAJAJA! 1st lesson surely is all the juicy stuff... and some connective tissue... another cool thing is sensei is teaching me spanish and i am teaching him chinese... end of the semester i will be speaking to him in spanish and get a reply in chinese cool huh ^^

Consider the greatest thing i am going to complete in the US&A is to speak Spanish, understand Spanish. Miss you guys back in SG... dunno whether u guys forget me liao T_T ... So many things have to be done, not done , undone... crap.... I think i stay here ;) .. JK jajaja !

Happy Valentines Day

13 Feb 2007 : Kid in the US&A: home of the "mighty U.S. warlord, Emperor Bush."

Just another day at work! Its gonna be a beautiful day when it starts to snow in the early morning; light flurries floating down from the sky, creating a ring of light against the street lamps... This could only mean SNOWBALL in the morning... classic Valentines day morning ...what a scene to start a day!

Izzit just an excuse to see the piles of snow out of my dorm? I managed to uproot my ass off the bed just to get to the 8am lecture today.... I dunno ^^... Oh yeah not snowing anymore, but instead there was freezing rain, instead of raining water its raining small little pellets of ice, looks similar to the coffee suger we take every morning... cool huh^^! I promptly gathered snow from the ground, rolled a snowball threw it at the sign "Gnomen Copy" @#$% idiots that ripped me 17 bucks just for my physics lab book...stupid rtards... nontheless i felt good.

After fooling enough with snow, I slid myself to the dining hall... It is so fun sliding across the metal grids across the floor, one thing to note; this act actually made me aware of the grids, so i could slide across it rather than sliding across it accidentaly. Met Akino and Pin for breakfast, baka Tristan still sleeping haha... baka! Check out Pin's darkness aura all around her... scary...

After breakfast... rolled another snowball; threw it at Pin hoping that will clear her aura, but it didn't work... girls ... girls... we headed off to our Physics and Calc2 lecture, still no signs of Tristan.

After Lecture... shucks ...freezing rain gone bad, it was raining ice pellets just like our tropical storm. The good thing is; this kinda rain dosn't wet your clothes, however it clogs the drain like nothing i have ever seen; forming a thick grey slush everywhere, like grey slurpy... for a moment, this scene reminds me of those glory days back in BMT chiong suah.... but only with my ltd ed nikes. Nothing better to do in this weather... i decided to head back to dorm... with freezing rain stinging my eyes.

Writing class... college writing class (sounds smarter) 1.30pm ...that could have been me.... i dragged myself out of bed after hearing that all classes after 4pm cancelled... Freezing rain + rain outside .... double trouble / bad combination... i have no idea how to cross the street to my class... the whole road is clogged full of wet slush... these wet slush is no childs play, step into it and your toes freeze off (just kidding), but close. While I was trudging my way through this minefield.. i heard a loud rumble... and chunks of ice started falling a roof, narrowly missing a pedestrain ... ARTY ARTY ARTY !!!! I managed to survive the ordeal and arrive at college writing class with wet feet and wet butt.... yes i fell -.- happy valentines day!

After class... weather became more forgiving... Just freezing rain alone... i went back to dorm against the wrath of god... freezing rain just stings... gets into your eyes and stuff like that... just cannot imagine what i had written for college writing ... 1603 word essay with my limited vocaburaly... scored an A-/B+ ... its just a miracle ... after i read all my classmates essay... i have nothing to say about mine... i think i just got lucky or does the lecturer got a fetish for young asian guys? If true = 1, take care i shall...

Dinner was shiok today... met Pin and Qin for dinner today... Dispite Lauren and Tako jioed me for dinner at his place ... its just too far, too slushy and puts too much risk from getting hit by falling ice... ZOMG good choice... Cartel style BBQ ribs for dinner at Stetson West and my usual stir fry of brocolli, onion and beef (but today i got shrimp). Think i just put on another 2 kg... feel so good... Qin got some valentine's day special heart shaped candy from the table... disgusting.... printed with words like "kiss me", "i love u", and other mushy stuff like that, sight of those little candies just make my stomach turn.... Candies looks like crack tablets with mushy stuff written all over them... taste like shit... Pin's darkness aura came again.... starts tearing at those little hearts.... must break hearts! ***RIPP***

Back to dorm... shit .... heard a faint but sharp wail.... no... cannot be... this cannot....be.... The wailing got louder and flashes start appearing form the crack of my door ...F$#%^ ... BAKA FIRE ALARM... whos red hot passion on valentines day trigged the smoke alarm? Meanwhile, while everybody evacuates to the porch, i stood in the freezing/normal rain watching the firemen storm into our building armed with huge crowbars... a minute later the firemen appeared again ... "its just an overcooked steak"... must be some valentine trying to impress the girl that he can cook... idiot...

Pin took plenty of photos today... just like every other day ... hope she gets her computer ASAP so i can grab some of the photos from facebook... fun in the snow and stuff like that... so u guys in SG can enjoy what i enjoy.

This is a 900++ word blog.... record entry... second longest piece of crap i had ever written in my life please enjoy yourself... Happy Sexy time!

ArTy FaRtY SiO !

Just went on a friendster testimonial spree ^^ seldom i have a mood or urge to write... thanks to my inner sloth taking a break...

Haha today college writing course was fun, topic: arts .... Sandro ( a 26 year old professor ), actually showed us a dvd " style wars". Mainly video-taped in the (80s... or issit 70s) about the debate on arts and graffiti, hip hop culture, breakdancing in NYC... It reminded me on one episode of samurai champloo where illiterate mugen learns how to write .... an infinity symbol; where he starts tagging everywhere, including the roof of the..... castle or shrine (dunno ... dont care).... happy times !

Vid shown kinda biased against the authorities as unartistic bunch of pple, showing us the smug smile on the face of the guy who suggested putting wolves within the fences to guard aginst those vandals.... "wolves are not known to attack men" thats what he said...

Goverment officals & Train services ----> graffiti bad, bad image on country.... uglyfying, unglorifying...
Taggers / Burners ----> "Its my name!", form of expression... culture

SO IS GRAFFITI A FORM OF ART ??? PLS COMMENT MY FRIENDS !!

Personal artistic definiation of f$%^ing art - a human instinct, a formed or formless means of expressing oneself, through our heart, skills, mind, body and soul; stimulating/influencing one's senses... examples .... cars, music, dance, martial arts, photography, paintings .... etc etc; made to appeal / hated.

Sio on graffiti ----> on the same wavelength as fine art, simply put "crude art" ... even cavemen do it.... nazi art exists

SO IS GRAFFITI A FORM OF ART ??? PLS COMMENT MY FRIENDS !!
